Meet the Orkney Vole — a wee island legend, now in knitted form.
The Orkney Vole is one of the islands' most beloved residents — a unique subspecies found nowhere else in the world, twice the size of a common field vole, and thought to have arrived in Orkney over 5,000 years ago. I was lucky enough to spot one in my own garden, and I was so charmed I just had to recreate him in yarn!
Sadly, the real Orkney Vole is currently under threat from an invasion of stoats — so until the population recovers, this knitted version might be the easiest way to get your hands on one! 🐭
Each vole comes with a label bearing his Latin name and a little note of introduction. This one, I can assure you, is not 5,000 years old. 😄
Hand knitted here in Orkney, each vole measures roughly 15cm and doubles as a functional pin cushion and a conversation-starting keepsake — the kind of gift that makes someone smile every time they spot it on a shelf.
Choose your shade — light or dark — and know that no two are ever identical. That's the magic of handmade.
